hi there, it’s nice to meet you

Artist Bio

My name is Maria Rosati (she/her), and I am a printmaker based out of Kjipuktuk (Halifax). I graduated from NSCAD University with my BFA in Fine Arts and am currently employed as a screen printer for Thief and Bandit, a local, sustainable clothing company. I recently completed a residency with Eyelevel ARC, as well as a solo exhibition of my series ‘Weigh In’ at the Anna Leonowens Gallery. ‘Weigh In’ has recently been featured in the publication Petal Projections, as well as in an episode on their OCADU LIVE Network Channel.

I work across print disciplines, focusing in silkscreen and intaglio, using ideas of layering, trace, and chance inherent within print as a medium to explore personal experiences felt in collective ways. In my work, I use photographic imagery and image distortion processes, sourcing them from my family's archive or moments in pop culture, like movies and magazine covers. The act of translation from image to print is important in my process. I use these photographic processes in combination with hand drawn images and text rooted in personal narrative, recently exploring my body as a matrix for printing. My work draws inspiration from a variety of personal experiences, including growing up in a border city, in an Italian-Canadian family, being neurodivergent, and living as a fat woman. In my recent work, I am exploring the effects of fatphobia, which I have been exposed to my whole life.
